Go big or go home. Not known for subtlety, it’s no surprise the diva went all out to shed excess pounds.
Life happens. And, with its ebb and flow, can come unwanted pounds. After an upheaval of major events (think: birthing twins, divorce, prepping for an upcoming wedding and, finally, splitting from her fiance), Mariah Carey has gone from bounce back body to revenge body. And, since the diva’s behavior is anything but ordinary, naturally, she utilized her own unique takes on standard workout and eating plans. Here, a look at how the singer slimmed down over the past years.
Mariah Carey’s Bounce Back After Babies
After giving birth in 2011 to twins Moroccan and Monroe, Carey shed an estimated 70 pounds. First up was losing approximated 40 pounds of water weight; what followed resulted from a nutrition plan while working as a spokesperson with the team at Jenny Craig. Carey said she met with a nutritionist to decide how many calories she should be eating per day and stuck to a 1,500 calorie diet. She also made sure to eat small meals every few hours.
“The first week, I lost 40 lbs of just water,” Carey had told People magazine. “It was just water, initially. When I started with the program, I lost at least 30 lbs. of weight that needed to be lost.”
Vanity wasn’t the only catalyst for her body transformation. Rather, it was improving her health, as carrying so much extra weight often makes everyday tasks, even simple ones, all the more challenging.
She added in her interview: “The whole point of this is not just like: ‘Oh, hey, look at me and my weight loss, I’m fantastic.’ It’s really health. Like I said, I learned it when I became helpless and felt so vulnerable like never before in my life.”
Carey had a cesarean section, which meant that initially exercise was unable to be a part of her weight loss journey. Instead, she told The Rosie Show that diet was “90% of it” until she was able to add exercise back into her schedule. However, once she was given the medical go-ahead, she then started taking long walks with her dogs and, as a longtime fan of water workouts, she also added in 45 minutes of aquatic exercises three to four days a week.
Why You Should Ditch the Scale to Lose Weight Like Mariah Carey
Don’t obsess over a number on the scale. Instead, measure your results by focusing on how you feel physically and mentally, as well as how clothes look on your frame. On the same episode of The Rosie Show, Carey had said: “Does this dress fit better than it did three years ago? Then I’d be like, ‘Ok, I’m good!” Trying on a bikini and/or body-hugging dress is a great way to see whether your silhouette and muscle tone are looking as desired. If you’re not up for squeezing into a form-fitting piece of clothing, grab a cloth measuring tape every few weeks and see how the numbers are looking around your upper arms, waist, hips and thighs — that’s a much more realistic approach for tracking how your body is responding to your hard work.
Often, as you sculpt, define and tone, the number on the scale will creep up, as muscle weighs more than body fat. The scale doesn’t differentiate between fat, muscle and water so it’s not exactly the most reliable tool when tracking your progress. Not to mention, it’s easy to get completely discouraged when you work up the courage to step on that mean little contraption and it tells you you’ve actually gained weight even though you’ve been sticking to the diet and literally working your butt off. Thus, forget the actual number and instead focus on how the body feels, both inside and out.
Mariah Carey’s Went to Extremes in 2016
It’s reported that Carey also used an extreme diet to shed weight as part of her pre-wedding prep and even post split from ex-fiance James Parker. According to an interview with E! News before the release of her December 2016 E! series Mariah’s World, she primarily ate just two foods: Salmon and capers. Yes, seriously.
“It’s really hard. My diet, you would hate it,” she had told the show. “All you eat is Norwegian salmon and capers every day. That’s it.” She added that the diet was actually “the worst” but it did, in fact, work. Since this extreme of a diet is virtually impossible, check out the following healthy nutritional ideas.
Mariah Carey Didn’t Skimp On Protein
Carey is also said to have included plenty of high-quality proteins (a good thing, considering that one cannot subsist on salmon and capers alone!) in her weight loss diet plan. Protein is essential to losing weight, as it curbs hungers, fuels the body, increases metabolism and fat-burning and is used as energy. It also promotes healing and muscle repair, especially important in recovery after an intense workout. Pairing protein with carbohydrate-rich foods can slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, preventing the spike and crash of blood sugar. Finally, protein can actually help save calories, creating the calorie deficit needed to lose weight, by satiating the body and maintaining fullness.
Schedule Snacks & Meals to Be Like Mariah Carey
Eating at regular intervals is another efficient way to lose weight. Spread meals and snacks evenly throughout the day. Be sure to also include the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Eating mini-meals will help maintain a revved up metabolism up and prevent hunger. Try not to allow more than four hours between meals or snacks. Failing to eat frequently slows down the metabolism. Plus, waiting too long between meals can make you more likely to overeat and/or make less-than-healthy nutrition choices. Carey is also said to have utilized a regular eating schedule to control and keep off the weight.
As extraordinary as the diva that is Mariah Carey is, turns out the secrets behind her slimming down are the simple standards of diet and exercise!
